Shipment Volume of Taiwanese Mobile Phone Branded Vendors to Decline in the Second Half of 2013, According to MIC
August 30, 2013

According to Eddie Han, a research associate of Taiwan's MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, shipment volume of Taiwanese mobile phone branded vendors totaled around 6.86 million units in the second quarter of 2013, up 33.6% sequentially. The growth is mainly ascribed to the fact that the shortage of high-end key components was alleviated in the second quarter.

Looking ahead to the second half of 2013, international brands like Apple, Samsung and Sony are going to launch their respective flagship models, which are expected to pose serious threats to Taiwanese vendors' flagship models in the high end market segment.

Furthermore, those international competitors also plan to consolidate some of flagship smartphones' features into their mid-range products. Despite the relatively low hardware specs in those mid-range smartphones compared to flagship models, the competition in the mid-range segment of smartphone industry is likely to be more intensified than in the past. As a result, without any effective marketing strategies expected from Taiwanese branded vendors in the short run, the combined shipment volume of Taiwanese mobile phone branded vendors is expected to reach around 9.98 million units in the second half of 2013, down 16.9% compared to the first half.
